Evidence of ecosystem overfishing in U.S. large marine ecosystems

چکیده

Abstract Marine capture fisheries in the U.S. are important from a societal, cultural, economic, and ecological perspective. Although generally well-managed, they still face some challenges as do most around world. To address these challenges, broader, more systematic approach is useful. There global need to develop measures of ecosystem overfishing (EOF) that detect an entire using readily available data based on widely repeatable patterns. These EOF indicators extend thinking beyond single stock largely well-established trophic theory. Moreover, be germane for both rich especially limited situations, easily interpretable, relatively simple calculate. Here, I present results several indicators—the Ryther, Fogarty, Friedland indices—as well indices cumulative biomass-Trophic Level curve parameters eight Large Ecosystems (LMEs). Significantly, all also have thresholds which indicated, particularly when coupled with other evidence. Evidence suggested two LMEs. Even apart thresholds, detecting whether occurring, or how debatable proposed are, there multiple benefits monitoring ecosystem-level indicators. Detecting patterns trends overall fishing changes chief among them. Additionally, detected LMEs at least 2–3 years, even up 5 years prior major impacts might not identified by piecing together stock-by-stock basis; thus, could serve early warning signal. propose instead starting history stocks been assessed what we deem valuable, look system LME if detected, explore means excess pressure systematically before delving into details specific stocks. conclude monitored, refined, then mitigate total should explored.

Ecosystem Overfishing in the Ocean

Fisheries catches represent a net export of mass and energy that can no longer be used by trophic levels higher than those fished. Thus, exploitation implies a depletion of secondary production of higher trophic levels (here the production of mass and energy by herbivores and carnivores in the ecosystem) due to the removal of prey. The depletion of secondary production due to the export of biom...

Concerns of resistant markers in marine ecosystem transformed plants

World population growth and requirement to global food security, application of genetic engineering and utilization of transgenic organisms have made more important. Using this technology, without regarding to its risks, can cause loses to environment. To generate transgenic organisms, selection systems are applied that cause to selective growth of transformed cells. Antibiotic resistance genes...

Discriminating mesozooplankton communities in Bushehr marine coastal ecosystems- Persian Gulf

Coastal ecosystems of Bushehr are shallow environments subject to human impacts, including shrimp aquaculture and urban expansion activities. A spatial-temporal study was conducted in order to assess the actual ecological status of the creeks, estuary and marine sites on the basis of their taxonomic composition and density of mesozooplankton. Zooplankton species distribution and abundance data ...

Historical overfishing and the recent collapse of coastal ecosystems.

Ecological extinction caused by overfishing precedes all other pervasive human disturbance to coastal ecosystems, including pollution, degradation of water quality, and anthropogenic climate change. Historical abundances of large consumer species were fantastically large in comparison with recent observations. Paleoecological, archaeological, and historical data show that time lags of decades t...
